S 32 and UKS-Ce1: two barium-rich symbiotic stars.

SCHMID H.M.

Abstract (from CDS):

Spectra of the two symbiotic binaries S32 and UKS-Ce1 are presented. They show the clear presence of carbon and s-process element enhancement in the atmosphere of the cool component. The giants in S32 and UKS-Ce1 are classified as CH and CH-like stars with spectral types C1,1CH and C4,5Jch respectively. The companion is a hot white dwarf which is ionising a high density nebula with strong HI and HeII emission. Both systems belong most likely to the halo population. S32 and UKS-Cel are unique systems because they exhibit simultaneously strong symbiotic activity and the barium star type abundance anomaly. The evolutionary relationship between symbiotic stars and CH/Ba stars is briefly discussed.
