Is there a β-problem in clusters of galaxies?

GERBAL D., DURRET F. and LACHIEZE-REY M.

Abstract (from CDS):

We analyze the β-problem in galaxy clusters, i.e. the fact that the parameter βX characterizing the slope of the hot X-ray emitting intracluster gas is not equal to the temperature ratio of the galaxy to intracluster gases, in contradiction with their theoretically predicted equality. We show that this discrepancy was due to an oversimplification of the dynamical problem, in accordance with the status of our knowledge of galaxy clusters in the 1970's. With a less restrictive dynamical analysis, we show that it is not possible to derive a simple relation between these two quantities only. We generalize the formerly derived equality to a new identity involving two more variables. Since this new identity shows no contradiction with observations, we conclude that there is no longer a β-problem in galaxy clusters.
