Multiband studies of two distant galaxy clusters at z > 0.8.

THIMM G.J. and BELLONI P.

Abstract (from CDS):

The galaxy clusters Cl1602+4313 (z=0.895) and Cl2155+0334 (z=0.820) were observed with broad-band B, R and four intermediate band filters (FWHM=100-200A) in order to derive low-resolution spectral energy distributions of cluster galaxies. Standard galaxy spectra and models for E+A-galaxies were fitted to the data. Cl2155 turned out to be not a galaxy cluster but a random fluctuation of field galaxies. The cluster characteristics of Cl1602 were confirmed. No galaxy similar to an old elliptical has been found. Instead, there is strong evidence that several galaxies recently (≤2Gyr) run through an intense phase of star formation. Their spectral energy distributions are very well fitted with E+A-type spectra, being the first possible detection of such post-starburst galaxies at z>0.8. In addition, a group of 4 star-forming galaxies at z>1.0 has been detected in the background of the cluster.
