Radiative shocks in atomic and molecular stellar-like atmospheres. VII. Influence of the excited level of the hydrogen atom: the wake structure.

Abstract (from CDS):
We investigate the structure of a steady state monodimensional radiative shock wave propagating through a collisional hydrogen gas composed of both atoms and molecules. The framework of this study is a "three mean photons model" taking into account the Lyman and Balmer continua and the Lyman-α line at the same time. The ambient conditions (1000K<T<5000K, 10–14g/cm3<ρ<10–8g/cm3) qualitatively reproduce those found in cool pulsating evolved stars. A model of the wake is proposed and its coupling with the radiative precursor is discussed through solution involving all radiations but the Balmer continuum in a self-consistent way. Among several conclusions discussed in the last section let us emphasize the role possibly played by the three-body recombinations beyond the Lyman dominated zone of the relaxing wake: with more than two levels of energy in the hydrogen atom, recombination is a sensitive process strongly linked to the Balmer radiation. Another point is that, in spite of a small increase of the ionization ratio at the front compared to that of a previous Paper (Gillet, Lafon, David, 1989), the conclusion is still that this ratio is fairly small for molecular gases and, in many cases, much lower than for purely atomic gases (like in the work of Narita, 1973). This may explain the absence of helium lines in the spectrum of "shocked" atmospheres of Mira stars.
