Studies on amplitude-modulated RR Lyrae stars. I. RV Ursa Majoris.

KOVACS G.

Abstract (from CDS):

All available photoelectric observations of RV UMa have been analyzed to obtain an accurate mathematical description of the light variation. We show that a stationary Fourier-sum with frequencies of the form of k.f0, k.f0±fm, where k=0, 1, ..., 11; f0=2.136467d–1; fm=0.011020d–1, gives a good overall fit to the data which span 8 years. Errors of the Fourier-coefficients are discussed in terms of coloured noise. After prewhitening, the remaining power in the frequency spectra show only some regular features which themselves alone are not enough to account for the scatter above the observational limit. Present data do not permit considerations about the physical nature of the residuals. We discuss the various possible models of the amplitude modulation. In all these models nonradial pulsation plays an important role. We stress the need for complete observational and theoretical efforts to find out the right physical mechanism behind the amplitude modulation.
