Equation of state of dense matter and maximum rotation frequency of neutron stars.

HAENSEL P., SALGADO M. and BONAZZOLA S.

Abstract (from CDS):

Maximum rotation frequency of uniformly rotating neutron star models, determined by the mass shedding condition, {OMEGA}max, has been calculated using a high precision numerical method, for a large set of equations of state of dense matter. The values of {OMEGA}max for the subset of equations of state, which are causal within neutron star models, are fitted, within a few percent, by an empirical formula {OMEGA}max≃0.77x104s–1(Ms/M☉)1/2(Rs/10km)–3/2, where Ms, Rs are mass and radius of the maximum allowable mass configuration of non-rotating models. Systematic deviations from empirical formula are correlated with stiffness of the equation of state of dense matter.
