Detection of CO emission from Dwingeloo 1.

Abstract (from CDS):

We report the detection of CO emission from Dwingeloo 1, a nearby barred spiral galaxy discovered recently by Kraan-Korteweg et al. (1994) behind the Milky Way. The CO integrated intensity within the central ∼55" is only 1.6 K[TR*]km/s, corresponding to an H2 mass of 5.5x106D/3Mpc)2M☉ if the Galactic N(H2)/ICO conversion factor of 3x1020cm–2(K.km/s)–1 is assumed. The weak CO emission relative to its HI emission could be due to a central molecular hole, an unusual N(H2)/ICO conversion factor, or a truly anomalous molecular-to-atomic gas mass ratio in the galaxy.
