Kelvin-Helmholtz instabilities in stellar jets. III. Evolution of spatial perturbations.

Abstract (from CDS):

We study the effects of radiative losses on the spatial growth of Kelvin-Helmholtz instabilities in supersonic jets. The numerical calculations have been carried out in two spatial dimensions, both in cylindrical and Cartesian (slab) geometry. By comparing the behavior of symmetric modes in the slab and cylindrical cases we obtain some general indications on the influence of the geometry on the instability development. We find that radiation is particularly effective in suppressing matter entrainment in the case of equal density between the jet and the ambient medium. Our results can be applied to the problem of the formation of the emission knots in jets from YSOs.
