Abstract (from CDS):

M. Modjaz, R. Kirshner, and P. Challis, Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics, report that a spectrogram (range 340-740 nm) of SN 2005ee (cf. IAUC 8603), obtained by N. Martimbeau on Sept. 25.32 UT with the F. L. Whipple Observatory 1.5-m telescope (+ FAST), shows it to be a young type-II supernova. The spectrum consists of a flat continuum, a P-Cyg profile of H_alpha, and absorption troughs of H_beta and other lines. Adopting the recession velocity of 9730 km/s for the host galaxy, as measured from H_alpha emission of an H II region in the host galaxy, the supernova expansion velocity derived from the minimum of the H_beta line is about 11000 km/s. A spectrogram (range 350-740 nm) of SN 2005ej (cf. CBET 231), obtained on Sept. 25.15 by Martimbeau, shows it to be a type-Ia supernova, with a spectral-feature age (Riess et al. 1997, A.J. 114, 722) of about 4 (± 2) days after maximum light; the supernova expansion velocity, derived from the minimum of Si II (rest 635.5 nm), and adopting the NED recession velocity of 11354 km/s for the host galaxy (from Falco et al. 1999, PASP 111, 438), is about 10000 km/s.
