Abstract (from CDS):

The "Nearby Supernova Factory" collaboration (G. Aldering, S. Bailey, S. Bongard, D. Kocevski, B. C. Lee, S. Loken, P. Nugent, S. Perlmutter, R. Scalzo, R. C. Thomas, L. Wang, and B. A. Weaver, Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, Berkeley; N. Blanc, Y. Copin, E. Gangler, L. Sauge, and G. Smadja, Institut de Physique Nucleaire de Lyon; P. Antilogus, S. Gilles, R. Pain, and R. Pereira, Laboratoire de Physique Nucleaire et de Haute Energies de Paris; E. Pecontal and G. Rigaudier, Centre de Recherche Astronomique de Lyon; R. Kessler, Kavli Institute for Cosmological Physics, Chicago; and C. Baltay, D. Rabinowitz, and A. Bauer, Yale University) reports that a spectrogram (range 320-1000 nm) of SN 2005kx (IAUC 8635), obtained on Nov. 30.6 UT with the Supernova Integral Field Spectrograph on the University of Hawaii 2.2-m telescope, reveals that it is a young type-II supernova. The spectrum includes P-Cyg profiles from the hydrogen Balmer series and He I 587.6-nm on a blue continuum. Assuming a host redshift of z = 0.026975 (Falco et al. 1999, PASP 111, 438; via NED), the H-alpha emission peak is clearly blueshifted from its restframe wavelength by 3500 km/s – an effect that has been observed in other young type-II supernovae (Dessart and Hillier 2005, A.Ap. 437, 667).
