Abstract (from CDS):

J. Deng, National Astronomical Observatories, Chinese Academy of Sciences; K. S. Kawabata, Hiroshima University; T. Hattori, National Astronomical Observatory of Japan; E. Pian and P. A. Mazzali, Trieste Observatory; and K. Nomoto, University of Tokyo, write on behalf of a larger collaboration: "We obtained optical spectra (range 470-900 nm) of SN 2005ma (CBET 329) and SN 2005mc (CBET 331) on Dec. 26.4 and 26.6 UT, respectively, with Subaru 8.2-m telescope (+ FOCAS). SN 2005ma exhibits strong H Balmer emission lines acompanied with very weak absorption features blueshifted by about 3000 km/s. The H-alpha and H-beta emission lines comprise an unresolved core, a narrow component with FWHM of about 1400 km/s, and a broad asymmetric component. Weak emission features of Fe II multiplets, He I 587.6-nm, and the Ca II near-infrared triplet are also seen. Except for the weak Balmer absorption features, the spectrum is very similar to that of SN 1997ab one year after discovery (Hagen et al. 1997, A.Ap. 324, L29), which suggests that SN 2005ma may also be a type-IIn supernova.
