Abstract (from CDS):

M. Modjaz, R. Kirshner, P. Challis, and S. Blondin, Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics, report that a spectrogram (range 350-740 nm) of SN 2005mg (cf. IAUC 8648), obtained by P. Berlind on Dec. 29.12 UT, shows it to be a young type-II supernova. The spectrum contains H_alpha and H_beta P-Cyg profiles and is heavily reddened. Interstellar Na I D absorption at the redshift of the host galaxy with an equivalent width of about 0.3 nm is detected, indicating gas along the line-of-sight in the host galaxy and thus suggesting reddening by dust. Adopting the NED recession velocity of 3973 km/s (Falco et al. 1999, PASP 111, 438) for the host galaxy, the maximum absorption in the H_beta line is blueshifted by 11000 km/s.
