Abstract (from CDS):

Further to IAUC 8622, R. Quimby and F. Castro, University of Texas, report the discovery of an apparent supernova in unfiltered CCD images taken on Feb 21.27 (at mag about 17.9) and 26.27 UT (mag about 17.7) using the 0.45-m ROTSE-IIIb telescope at the McDonald Observatory (found by subtracting a co-addition of images taken between 2004 Dec. 15 and 2005 June 8 with limiting mag about 19.0). The new object is located at R.A. = 12h14m38s.68, Decl. = +12o13'46".9 (equinox 2000.0; uncertainty ± 0".6), which is 0".9 west and 0".9 south of a galaxy of mag SDSS r = 21.9 and SDSS position end figures 38s.73, 47".7, although the galaxy is not significantly detected in the ROTSE-IIIb data. J. Maund (also University of Texas) and Quimby add that a spectrum (420-890 nm), obtained on Feb. 27.27 with the 9.2-m Hobby-Eberly Telescope (+ Marcario Low-Resolution Spectrograph) by M. Shetrone and V. Riley, shows 2006an to be a type-Ia supernova. Taking a weak emission line at 698.0 nm to be H-alpha from the host, they derive a redshift of z = 0.064. The spectrum is a good match to SN 1994D at 3 days after maximum (Patat et al. 1996, MNRAS 278, 111).
