Abstract (from CDS):

S. Blondin, M. Modjaz, R. Kirshner, and P. Challis, Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics, report that a spectrogram (range 350-740 nm) of SN 2006cj (cf. CBET 515), obtained on May 22.32 UT by M. Calkins with the F. L. Whipple Observatory 1.5-m telescope (+ FAST), shows it to be a type-Ia supernova around maximum light. Cross-correlation with a library of type-Ia-supernova spectra indicates that 2006cj is most similar to the 1991T-like supernova 1998es (cf. IAUC 7054) at 1 day past maximum. Narrow emission lines are detected from the host galaxy at a redshift of cz = 20106 ± 30 km/s, consistent with the NED recession velocity of 20241 km/s (Cortese et al. 2003, A.Ap. 401, 471) for the apparent host galaxy (whose 2MASX position is given as R.A. = 12h59m24s.1, Decl.= +28o20'50", equinox 2000.0). Adopting either value for the recession velocity of the supernova, the maximum absorption in the (relatively weak) Si II line (rest 635.5 nm) is blueshifted by roughly 10500 km/s.
