Abstract (from CDS):

The "Nearby Supernova Factory" collaboration (P. Antilogus, S. Gilles, R. Pain, and R. Pereira, Laboratoire de Physique Nucleaire et de Haute Energies de Paris; N. Blanc, Y. Copin, E. Gangler, and G. Smadja, Institut de Physique Nucleaire de Lyon; G. Aldering, C. Aragon, S. Bailey, S. Bongard, D. Kocevski, S. Loken, P. Nugent, S. Perlmutter, K. Runge, R. Scalzo, R. C. Thomas, L. Wang, and B. A. Weaver, Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, Berkeley; E. Pecontal and G. Rigaudier, Centre de Recherche Astronomique de Lyon; R. Kessler, Kavli Institute for Cosmological Physics, Chicago; and C. Baltay, A. Bauer, D. Herrera, and D. Rabinowitz, Yale University) reports the discovery of a supernova (approximate mag 19.0, calibrated to R) in NEAT images obtained on May 25.2 UT with the Palomar 1.2-m Schmidt telescope (cf. CBET 263): SN 2006cn is located at R.A. = 13h21m49s.14, Decl. = -23d51'04".6 (equinox 2000.0). A spectrum (range 320-1000 nm), obtained on May 26.3 with the Supernova Integral Field Spectrograph on the University of Hawaii 2.2-m telescope, reveals 2006cn to be a type-II supernova at an approximate redshift (measured from the peak of its H_alpha feature) of z = 0.04. The H_alpha feature is in net emission, with almost no absorption feature visible. H_beta and H_gamma P-Cyg profiles are also discernible on the blue continuum.
