Abstract (from CDS):

R. J. Foley, M. Moore, D. S. Wong, D. Pooley, and A. V. Filippenko, University of California, Berkeley, report that inspection of CCD spectra (range 330-1040 nm), obtained on Oct. 24 UT with the Lick 3-m telescope (+ Kast), shows that 2006hn (IAUC 8758) is a type-Ia supernova and 2006iu (IAUC 8758) is a type-II supernova. SN 2006hn resembles a type-Ia event about a month after maximum brightness. Adopting the recession velocity of 6700 km/s for the host galaxy of 2006iu (measured from narrow emission lines), the minimum of the H-alpha absorption is found to be blueshifted by 7000 km/s.
