Bright variable star in Cassiopeia.

GRAY R.O.

Abstract (from CDS):

R. O. Gray, Department of Physics and Astronomy, Appalachian State University, reports that a spectrum (range 380-560 nm; resolution 0.18 nm/pixel; S/N about 100) of the new variable in Cas (cf. CBET 718) was obtained on Nov. 5.04 UT using the G/M classification spectrograph on the Dark Sky Observatory (DSO) 0.81-m telescope. This spectrum yields a precise spectral type of A1 IV+ and shows no peculiarities with respect to the MK A1 IV standard rho Peg. There is no indication of emission, nor are the shell lines (e.g., Fe II 423.3-nm, or lines of the Fe II multiplet 42) enhanced in the spectrum. The hydrogen-line cores show no sign of emission. The very blue continuum reported by Iijima on CBET 718 is not in evidence, but it turns out the comparison star used by Iijima (HD 217086) is itself very reddened. The reddening estimated by Munari et al. of E(B-V) = 0.29 is in good agreement with the DSO flux-calibrated spectrum. The emission reported by Tucker at 466.7 nm is not seen in the DSO spectrum. The hydrogen-beta line has an equivalent width of 1.39 nm.
