Abstract (from CDS):

E. Y. Hsiao, M. L. Graham, C. J. Pritchet, and D. Balam, Department of Physics and Astronomy, University of Victoria, report that a spectrum (range 390-703 nm, resolution 0.3 nm) of 2008dw (cf. CBET 1426), obtained on July 8.32 UT with the 1.82-m Plaskett Telescope of the National Research Council of Canada, shows it to be a type-II supernova several days past maximum light. Comparison with a library of supernovae spectra via the "superfit" matching program of Howell et al. (2005, Ap.J. 634, 1190) indicates that 2008dw is most similar to the type-II supernova 1993W at four days past maximum. Adopting for UGC 8932 the NED recession velocity of 3728 km/s (Schneider et al. 1992, Ap.J. Suppl. 81, 5S) an expansion velocity of 8500 km/s is derived from the minimum of the H_alpha absorption. A spectrogram of 2008ea (cf. CBET 1432), obtained as above on July 8.44 UT, shows it to be a type-II supernova around 1 week past maximum. Cross- correlation with a library of supernova spectra using the "Supernova Identification" code (Blondin and Tonry 2007, Ap.J. 666, 1024) indicates that 2008ea is most similar to the type-II-plateau supernova 2006bp at 7 days past maximum light.
