Abstract (from CDS):

M. Stritzinger, N. Morrell, F. Salgado, and M. Hamuy, on behalf of the Carnegie Supernova Project and the Millennium Center for Supernova Astrophysics collaboration, report that they obtained spectra (range 403-1070 nm) of 2008gq (cf. CBET 1556) and 2008gr (cf. CBET 1557) with the Las Campanas Magellan Baade Telescope (+ IMACS) on Nov. 2.1-2.2 UT. After close inspection of the spectrum of 2008gq, they conclude that it is a type-IIp supernova a couple of months past explosion; adopting a host-galaxy recession velocity of 3628 km/s (de Vaucouleurs et al., Third Reference Catalogue of Bright Galaxies, Version 3.9) for the host galaxy (MCG -02-26-39), H-beta is measured to be blue-shifted by roughly 5000 km/s.

The spectrum of 2008gr displays a blue continuum with incipient P-Cyg profiles in Balmer and He I lines, indicative of a young type-IIp supernova. With the aid of the "Supernova Identification" code (SNID; Blondin and Tonry 2007, Ap.J. 666, 1024), 2008gr is found to be most similar to the type-IIp supernova 2006bp a week past explosion. Adopting a host-galaxy recession velocity of 6831 km/s (da Costa et al. 1998, A.J. 116, 1) for the host galaxy (IC 1579), H-beta is measured to be blue-shifted by roughly 11000 km/s.
