Abstract (from CDS):

Ondrej Pejcha, Ohio State University; and Jose Prieto, Carnegie Observatory, report that optical spectra (range 380-720 nm; resolution 0.8 nm) of supernova 2009ls were obtained with the Hiltner 2.4-m telescope (+ CCDS) at MDM Observatory on Nov. 25.53 UT. The spectrum shows a blue continuum with broad Balmer lines, characteristic of a young type-II supernova. After correcting for the recession velocity of NGC 3423 (+1011 km/s; de Vaucouleurs et al. 1991, Third Reference Catalogue of Bright Galaxies; via NED), an expansion velocity of 12500 km/s is measured from the blue-shifted absorption of the H-alpha P-Cyg profile. The following Sloan magnitude measurements were obtained with RETROCAM on the Hiltner 2.4-m telescope: Nov. 25.501 UT, g' = 14.74 ± 0.09; 25.503, r' = 14.78 ± 0.08; 25.506, i' = 14.88 ± 0.09.
