Abstract (from CDS):

F. Ciabattari and E. Mazzoni, Borgo a Mozzano, Italy, report the discovery of a possible supernova (mag 18.2) on unfiltered CCD images (limiting mag 19.1) obtained on Aug. 26.08 UT with a 0.5-m Newtonian telescope in the course of the Italian Supernovae Search Project. The new object is located at R.A. = 1h18m07s.80, Decl. = +17d33'29".8 (equinox 2000.0; astrometry with respect to UCAC-2 stars), which is 6" west and 15" south of the center of the galaxy NGC 459. Nothing is visible at this position on digitized plates of the Palomar Sky Survey from 1987 Aug. 24 (J plate; limiting magnitude 20.3) and 1989 Nov. 4 (F plate; limiting magnitude 20.3). The variable was designated as PSN J01180780+1733298 when it was posted on the Central Bureau's TOCP webpage and is here designated SN 2011fv based on the spectroscopy reported below. Additional unfiltered CCD magnitudes for 2011fv: Aug. 30.08, 18.1 (Ciabattari and Mazzoni; limiting mag 19.8); 31.24, 18.1 (R. A. Koff, Bennett, CO, USA; Meade 0.25-m f/10 Schmidt-Cassegrain reflector + Apogee AP-47p camera; image scale 2"/pixel; limiting mag 18.9; position end figures 07s.69, 28".7); Sept. 3.408, 18.4 (Joseph Brimacombe, Cairns, Australia; position end figures 07s.81, 29".2); 6.094, 18.1 (Federica Luppi and Luca Buzzi, Varese, Italy; 0.38-m f/6.8 reflector; position end figures 07s.82, 29".4; image posted at website URL http://www.astrogeo.va.it/pub/TOCP/PSN_N459.jpg).
