Supernova 2012gc in NGC 7298 = PSN J22305042-1411163.

BOCK G.

Abstract (from CDS):

Greg Bock, Windaroo, Queensland, Australia, reports his discovery of an apparent supernova (red mag 17.4) on an unfiltered CCD image (limiting magnitude 18.5) taken on Nov. 5.42 UT with a 35-cm Meade LX200R reflector (+ ST10 camera) in the course of the Backyard Observatory Supernova Search (BOSS). The new object is located at R.A. = 22:30:50.42, Decl. = -14:11:16.3 (equinox 2000.0; reference stars from the USNOB and UCAC3 catalogues), which is 4" west and 1" north of the center of the galaxy NGC 7298. Nothing is visible at this position on Bock's image from 2011 Oct. 22 or on Digitized Sky Survey red and infrared images (limiting red mag > 19). The variable was designated PSN J22305042-1411163 when it was posted at the Central Bureau's TOCP webpage and is here designated SN 2012gc based on the spectroscopic confirmation reported below.
