V442 Cen: Is the Accreting White Dwarf Ultra-rapidly Rotating?

CALLAHAN L., SION E.M. and GODON P.

Abstract (from CDS):

As observed with the Hubble Space Telescope, the archival Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph far-ultraviolet spectrum of the white dwarf (WD) in the dwarf nova V442 Cen reveals no photospheric absorption features from accreted metals, despite its WD accounting for 100% of the UV light in quiescence. We discuss why V442 Cen does not exhibit any metals in its photosphere, including the possibility that its rotational velocity is so rapid that it smears out the absorption lines of accreted metals. In this case, the accreting WD in V442 Cen would be the most rapidly rotating non-magnetic CV WD.
