Soft X-ray observations of the Galactic halo and the interstellar medium.

SIDHER S.D., SUMNER T.J., QUENBY J.J. and GAMBHIR M.

Abstract (from CDS):

Detailed spectral modelling of the soft X-ray background (SXRB) as observed using ROSAT PSPC data in the direction of the Draco cloud, in conjunction with ROSAT WFC and previous B and C band data, reveals the need for three emission components in this direction. These comprise an extragalactic power law contribution of 1.0x10–2E–1.4ph/(cm2skeVsr), emission from the Galactic halo with logT=6.2 and emission measure 0.024cm–6pc and emission from the local cavity hot gas at logT=5.9 with emission measure 0.004cm–6pc.
Result. of PSPC data analysis for several other observations spanning Draco's line of galactic longitude are also presented. They again confirm the adequacy of the three component model, at least for directions away from the galactic plane. The results are interpreted in terms of the hot halo plus interspersed interstellar medium (ISM) models.
