Optical studies of the newly discovered polar AX J2315-592.

THOMAS H.-C. and REINSCH K.

Abstract (from CDS):

We report on observations of a new AM Herculis binary identified as the optical counterpart of the X-ray source AX J9315-592 detected serendipitously by ASCA It has an orbital period of 89min and its optical flux is strongly modulated at longer wavelengths. The main contribution during the bright phase is optically thin cyclotron emission in a relatively low magnetic field (<17MG). The Hα emission line consists of a broad and a sharp component shifted in radial velocity phase against each other. The broad component originates in the accretion stream from the low-mass companion onto the white dwarf, the sharp component on the irradiated surface of the low-mass companion. The inclination of the system is ∼45deg, the distance to AX J2315-592 is larger than 175pc.
