Extending the spectral coverage of unidentified galactic plane gamma-ray sources.

MACOMB D.J. and SHRADER C.R.

Abstract (from CDS):

Uncovering the nature of the galactic plane gamma-ray sources has been an important problem in high-energy astrophysics since the publication of the COS-B results. Counterpart searches, the most widely pursued method for understanding these sources, have been largely unsuccessful partly because of the poor spatial resolution of gamma-ray instruments. Often there are either many candidates in a field or none and extrapolating poorly defined source characteristics over many orders of magnitude in energy can make identifying non-gamma-ray counterparts difficult. Some progress can be made by learning as much as possible about these sources at energies directly above and below the 100MeV-1GeV range, and then studying adjacent wavelengths. Using this as our approach, we identify ten candidates from the population of unidentified EGRET sources for analysis based upon their 30-100MeV EGRET flux for COMPTEL analysis and present evidence of two possible detections.
