Beams and cones from aligned rotators.

EASTLUND B.J. and MILLER B.

Abstract (from CDS):

Curvature radiation from corotating relativistic particles in filled magnetospheric shells has been postulated as the source of coherent radio pulsar emission from oblique rotators. With the addition of electrostatic mirroring, that model replicated the incoherent and coherent emission from the Crab pulsar over 15 decades of frequency. This Letter calculates the anisotropic spatial distribution of radiation from the model when the emitting object is an aligned rotator. For high emission frequencies, intense, steady, narrow, oppositely directed beams or conical shells of radiation are predicted. The energy flux per steradian (brightness) within such beams and conical shells can be more than 106 times the average flux per steradian measured outside the beam or cone. The model further predicts emission with spectrum ``hardened'' compared to conventional pulsars. Such hardening is a result of penetration of supernova shells at the 10-100 day epoch.
