Possible Nova in Sagittarius.

TABUR V., LILLER W., JONES A. and MARANG F.

Abstract (from CDS):

V. Tabur, Wanniassa, Australian Capital Territory, reports his discovery of an apparent nova (red mag 9.7) on unfiltered CCD images taken with a 100-mm telephoto lens on Oct. 25.44 and 25.48 UT. A CCD image taken by Tabur with a 0.28-m reflector yields the following precise position: R.A. = 17h47m21s.74, Decl. = -23o28'23".1 (equinox 2000.0). W. Liller, Vina del Mar, Chile, provides the following position end figures from a CCD image taken on Oct. 27.1: 21s.63 ± 0s.05, 21".4 ± 0".4. Though the surrounding star field is crowded, Tabur adds that nothing appears at this location on Digitized Sky Survey images from 1991 (red) and 1987. Also, nothing appears at this location on previous images taken by Tabur on numerous dates back to Aug. 4, the most recent being Oct. 19. Magnitude estimates, visual unless otherwise noted: Oct. 21.1, [11.5 (Liller; red photograph); 26.354, 10.3 (A. Jones, Nelson, New Zealand); 26.42, 10.5 (Tabur); 26.42, 9.6 (Tabur; unfiltered CCD); 27.015, 9.98 (Liller; CCD, broadband V). F. Marang, South African Astronomical Observatory, reorts the following infrared magnitudes: Oct. 25.75, H = 7.86, J = 8.36, K = 7.58; 26.74, 7.31, 7.88, 7.07.
