Abstract (from CDS):

A. J. Drake, S. G. Djorgovski, A. Mahabal, M. J. Graham, and R. Williams, California Institute of Technology; E. C. Beshore and S. M. Larson, Lunar and Planetary Laboratory, University of Arizona; and E. Christensen, Gemini Observatory, report the discovery of an apparent supernova detected in multiple sequences of exposures of the Catalina Sky Survey (CSS) using the 0.7-m f/1.9 Catalina Schmidt telescope (+ 4000x4000 camera). SN 2008 UT R.A. (2000.0) Decl. Mag. Offset 2008bm Mar. 29.33 13 02 58.78 +10 30 27.0 17.4 6".8 E, 12".5 N Nothing is visible at this position in past CSS images dating back to Jan. 11.48 and 31.50 UT (no limiting magnitude provided) or in prior Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) and Palomar-Quest co-added images (limiting magnitude approximately 23). Specific details and links to discovery images can be found at the following website URL: http://voeventnet.caltech.edu/feeds/ATEL/CSS/803291090704132795.atel.html. The apparent host galaxy has a redshift of z = 0.032 (de Vaucouleurs et al. 1991, via NED) and SDSS magnitudes g about 16.1, r about 15.7, and i = 15.5. J.-C. Pelle confirms the presence of a new object on an image acquired by N. Teamo at Punaauia, Tahiti, with a 0.41-m f/8 Ritchey- Chretien telescope on Mar. 29.48, providing mag V = 17.5 and position end figures 58s.80, 27".2 for 2008bm; the new object is circled (with lines of R.A. drawn in for every 15 sec, and Decl. lines for every 2') in Teamo's image posted at the following website URL: http://www.astrosurf.com/snweb2/images/13030p1030_20080328_F85.jpg. Following posting on the Central Bureau's unconfirmed-objects webpage, D. Balam, R. Robb, P. Wiegert, and A. Domokos confirm the presence of a new unresolved source at magnitude g = 17.58 (with colors u-g = +0.76 and g-r = +0.30, based on an SDSS-catalogued star of mag u = 18.93, g = 17.95, and r = 17.65 located at R.A. = 13h03m03s.43, Decl. = +10o30'16".7) on their CCD images obtained with the 1.82-m Plaskett Telescope of the National Research Council of Canada on Mar. 31.24; 2008bm was measured to be at R.A. = 13h02m58s.82, Decl. = +10o30'27".2, or 8".0 east and 12".8 north of the galaxy center. Nothing appears at this position on Palomar Sky Survey images.
