Abstract (from CDS):

U. Munari, T. Saguner, and A. Siviero, Istituto Nazionale di Astrofisica, Padova Astronomical Observatory; and P. Valisa, S. Dallaporta, and M. Graziani, "Asiago Novae and Symbiotic Stars" (ANS) collaboration, report that CCD photometry of V5584 Sgr (cf. IAUC 9089) yields the following magnitudes: Oct. 27.719 UT, B = 10.65, V = 9.74; 28.709, 10.52, 9.31; 29.708, 10.38, 9.21. Spectroscopic observations with the 0.6-m telescope of the Schiaparelli Observatory in Varese were obtained in low- and medium-resolution mode on Oct. 28.73, and in high-resolution echelle mode on Oct. 29.72. The spectra for Oct. 28.73 are dominated by a well-developed, highly reddened absorption continuum. The FWHM of the absorption lines is 310 km/s, and the heliocentric radial velocity of the absorption spectrum is -283 km/s. Only two lines show, in addition to the absorption, also the red-shifted emission component of a classical P-Cyg profile: H-alpha and Fe II 516.9-nm (multiplet 42). Their equivalent widths, FWHM, and integrated fluxes are 0.344 nm, 460 km/s, and 2.3 x 10**(-12) erg cm**(-2) s**(-1) for H-alpha, and 0.092 nm, 320 km/s, and 6.0 x 10**(-13) erg cm**(-2) s**(-1) for Fe II. The emission components are displaced by 440 km/s to the red of the absorption spectrum. The echelle spectrum for Oct. 29.72 shows only minimal changes, being dominated by the same strong absorption continuum and very weak emissions from Balmer and Fe II multiplets 42, 49, and 74. The 578.0-, 579.7-, 584.4-, 585.0-, 611.3-, 619.6-, 620.3-, 627.0-, and 661.4-nm diffuse interstellar bands are well visible in absorption, in addition to interstellar Na I, Ca II, and K I atomic lines. The nova appears to be of the Fe II type and culminating toward optical maximum at the time of writing.
