Abstract (from CDS):

The PTF (ATEL #1964; http://www.astro.caltech.edu/ptf/) reports the discovery of three new supernovae.

PTF11caz was discovered by autonomous PTF software on March 31, 2011 UT at RA(J2000) = 15:43:46.3 and DEC(J2000) = +37:18:44.4 at a magnitude of 20.6 in R-band (calibrated with respect to the USNOB1 catalog). The SN is not detected in previous PTF images from March 13, 2011 down to a 3-sigma limit of R=21.3 mag. A spectrum was obtained using the Double-Beam Spectrograph (DBSP; Oke & Gunn 1982, PASP, 94, 586) on the Palomar 5-m Hale telescope on April 23 UT, revealing the supernova to be of type Ia at z=0.192 approximately 17 days after peak magnitude.

PTF11cey was discovered by autonomous PTF software on April 14, 2011 UT at RA(J2000) = 16:40:57.39 and DEC(J2000) = +23:07:44.0 at a magnitude of 19.8 in R-band (calibrated with respect to the USNOB1 catalog). The SN is not detected in previous PTF images from April 1, 2011 down to a 3-sigma limit of R=21.3 mag. A spectrum was obtained using the Double-Beam Spectrograph (DBSP; Oke & Gunn 1982, PASP, 94, 586) on the Palomar 5-m Hale telescope on April 23 UT, revealing the supernova to be of type Ia at z=0.13 approximately 6 days after peak magnitude.

PTF11cmg was discovered by the Galaxy Zoo Supernova Project (Smith et al. 2011, MNRAS, 412, 1309; http://supernova.galaxyzoo.org) on April 27, 2011 UT at RA(J2000) = 11:19:31.93 and DEC(J2000) = +54:33:48.2 at a magnitude of 19.8 in R-band (calibrated with respect to the USNOB1 catalog). The SN is not detected in previous PTF images from April 23, 2011 down to a 3-sigma limit of R=21 mag. A spectrum was obtained using the SNIFS spectrograph on the 2.2-m UH telescope on April 29 UT, revealing the supernova to be a type Ia at z=0.1 approximately 7 days before peak magnitude.

SNIFS (The SuperNova Integral Field Spectrograph) on the University of Hawaii 2.2-m telescope is part of the Nearby Supernova Factory II project, a scientific collaboration between the Centre de Recherche Astronomique de Lyon, Institut de Physique Nucl'eaire de Lyon, Laboratoire de Physique Nucl'eaire et des Hautes Energies, Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, Yale University, University of Bonn, Max Planck Institute for Astrophysics, Tsinghua Center for Astrophysics, and the Centre de Physique des Particules de Marseille.
