E. Kankare, C. Romero-Canizales and S. Mattila, University of Turku, report that a spectrum of PSN J22085244+4020240 = SN 2012gi was obtained on Nov. 12.9 UT with the Nordic Optical Telescope (+ ALFOSC; range 320-910 nm, resolution 2.1 nm). Cross-correlation with a library of supernova spectra using the "Supernova Identification" code (SNID; Blondin and Tonry 2007, Ap.J. 666, 1024) suggests that SN 2012gi is a type-Ic supernova with the spectrum showing similarities to those of SNe 1994I and 2004aw a few days before maximum light. The authors further report that an image obtained with the NOT on Nov. 12.9 provides an R-band magnitude of about 16.5 for SN 2012gi, corresponding to an absolute magnitude of about -18.5, assuming a Virgo and Great Attractor corrected distance of 100 Mpc (H_o = 73 km/s/Mpc) for the host galaxy, UGC 11922 (Springob et al. 2005, Ap.J. Suppl. 160, 149).
